Relationships education, relationships and sex education (RSE) and health education

This new new curriculum was initially planned to be mandatory from September 2020, with schools encouraged to adopt it early from September 2019.

Following the decision to close schools for the majority of pupils, the Department has been working to assess the immediate and long term impact of coronavirus on education delivery, including the implications on a school’s ability to discharge their duty relating to the implementation of these subjects.

Schools able to delay teaching the new curriculum till Summer 2021

In a letter to schools, written on the 3rd June 2020, the Department for Education says RSHE will still be statutory from 1st September 2020.

However, if schools feel 'they have been unable to adequately meet the requirements because of the lost time and competing priorities [brought about by the Covid-19 response]' they may delay teaching the new curriculum until the summer term 2021.
