'Safer Recruitment in Education'  (accredited course)

20 September and 18 October 2017
Registration: 8.45, Start: 9.00, Close: 17.00
Mabledon Place, London, WC1H 9BD

If your organisation recruit staff and/or volunteers into the children and young people’s workforce staff should be trained in safer recruitment practices. The Independent Schools Inspectorate and Ofsted recommend that schools ensure that sufficient relevant staff are trained in safer recruitment processes.

We recognise that schools and education settings are becoming increasingly accountable for safeguarding children when recruiting and selecting staff. This accredited training supports schools to effectively discharge their responsibilities for safer recruitment.

This event is ideal for:

  • Headteachers and Deputy Heads
  • Designated Safeguarding Leads
  • Any member of staff taking part in an appointment panel
  • Any administrative staff who support appointment panels

Taking appropriate action includes preventing unsuitable people from working with children; promoting safe practice and challenging unsafe practice; identifying situations where there are grounds for concern about a child and ensuring that all those who are involved in providing services for children work in effective partnerships.

Course Outcomes: Participants will:

  • Explore how to meet current expectations in relation to the appointment of staff
  • Learn about how perpetrators operate and what this means for recruitment practice
  • Gain an awareness of how to explore with candidates their suitability for work in education settings where safeguarding is an issue
  • Develop an understanding of how to maintain anti-discrimination and equal opportunities when appointing staff
  • Consider how to develop and maintain a safer working culture

Attending delegates are assessed throughout the session and all those that pass will receive an accredited certificate of completion after the event. Due to this process the event is slightly longer that our usual events, delegates must be present for the entire session. Registration is at 8.45 for a 9.00 start and the course will conclude by 16.30.

testimonials from delegates who have attended this event:

The course exceeded my expectations, and covered in depth all areas for consideration for safer recruitment and safeguarding children. There was plenty of scope for discussion, group work and questions, and a good balance of information and problem solving using scenarios/hypothetical situations

Clearer identification of the necessary safeguarding checks people working in schools need in order to keep our children safe

Great strategies for deterring people for applying for a role in school who do not have the children's best interests at heart

Anyone recruiting to posts working with children would learn something

It will help me contribute effectively, as a school governor, to discussions and decisions relating to safeguarding issues/policies. It will also enable me to participate usefully in recruitment panels at the school

It was very comprehensive - the full day was helpful - and thoughtful
